Fred Wessels’ record speaks for itself and traces its roots to the heart of the 81st Missouri House District. He attended St. Anthony of Padua Grade School and St. Mary’s High School. After a tour of duty in Vietnam, he earned a B.S. in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Urban Affairs from St. Louis University. Upon graduation, Fred spent seven years at City Hospital and eventually became the hospital’s chief administrator. He played a major role in introducing cost-effective measures while improving services to patients.
Fred broadened his healthcare background when he and his family went to Saudi Arabia where he served as Director of Administration at the King Khalid University Hospital. Returning to the U.S., Fred served as Executive Director of the St. Louis Peregrine Society, where he managed staff and raised funds to provide free services to over 2,000 cancer patients annually. Serving 28 years on the St. Louis Board of Aldermen, Fred was described as a “fiscal hawk”, who managed public funds responsibly but compassionately.
Appointed as Executive Director of the St. Louis Community Development Agency in 2014, Fred changed the way federal housing funds were distributed in St. Louis by instituting a transparent, competitive and data-driven process.
